Portraits by Lieve Blancquaert for Trans – Et alors?

Photographer Lieve Blancquaert is exhibiting portraits of transgender people in the conservatories of GUM & Botanical Garden as part of the exhibition BORDERS. The images form part of the book Trans – Et alors? by Piet Hoebeke and Marijke Libert.

Photographer Lieve Blancquaert took portraits of twelve people for the book Trans – Et alors? by medical transition expert Piet Hoebeke and author Marijke Libert. The book uses words and images to tell the story of the boundaries that the trans people have broken through. As part of the BORDERS exhibition, a selection of the images is on display in the conservatories of GUM & Botanical Garden.

Lieve Blancquaert’s photographs form a powerful and intimate part of the stories. In her portraits, the human being takes centre stage, vulnerable and strong at the same time. Together with Blancquaert’s poignant portraits, a series of visual narratives emerges that invites us to look, listen and reflect on identity, the body and the boundaries we draw (consciously or unconsciously).

The book Trans - Et alors? is available to buy in the museum shop.
