MuST

The GUM’s Museum Student Team
MuST, our Museum Student Team, is an important part of the GUM & Botanical Garden community. Each year a group of 25 enthusiastic students (18–26 years old) from different study programs and backgrounds join MuST as a special team of volunteers. They’re active both behind the scenes and up front, bringing their fresh perspective into the organization.

MuST started in 2018. Since then, several generations of passionate students have taken part — many of them staying engaged with the GUM & Botanical Garden for years and building strong bonds with each other. For our team, MuST has become an invaluable sounding board within the organization.

From February to December, MuSTers meet every two weeks for a MuST evening at the GUM & Botanical Garden. These evenings are all about inspiring activities, learning opportunities, fresh insights, and plenty of fun — exclusively for MuST. By joining, students get to know the organization and the team, while also helping shape what we do in a critical, creative, and engaged way.

MuST members are active in all kinds of ways:

  • brainstorming about exhibitions,

  • coming up with ideas for Museum Night,

  • joining workshops,

  • and getting exclusive behind-the-scenes access to the collections.

Depending on their interests, they can contribute to different projects — from organizing public activities to creating digital content or giving feedback on texts, campaigns, and try-outs. And of course, there’s always room to bring in their own ideas too.

After leaving Sint-Lukas in Brussels, I began to miss the artistic side of my life. MuST brought that back into my life. On a personal level, I have a form of autism, which has always made me a bit apprehensive about joining a group. However, at MuST, I am less concerned about that.

I never expected that, as a MuST member, I would end up as a “fortune teller” at Museum Night in 2023. It was a wonderful experience where I also had the opportunity to interact with visitors.
