Leg prosthesis

In the 16th century, firearms flourished on battlefields, and therefore gunshot wounds increased as well. These wounds would often get infected, which, according to doctors was due to poisonous gunpowder. The doctors’ solution was to close the wounds with branding irons and pour boiling oil over the wound. However, this extremely painful procedure would merely aggravate the tissue damage, and actually increased the risk of infection. Ambroise Paré (1510–1590) was the first to realise this treatment was not working, and moved on to early amputation. The mortality rate was reduced immediately.

Who manufactured the first prostheses?

In Antiquity and throughout the Middle Ages amputees would have to make do with wooden stilts and crutches. French surgeon Ambroise Paré (1510 - 1590) developed the very first real leg prosthesis. The prosthesis consisted of a leather cylinder that fitted around the thigh, which was surrounded by a metal cylinder, a knee joint, a metal-clad artificial leg and a metal foot with a hinge and a spring. Paré also designed a hand prothesis complete with moveable wrist and fingers.

What is special about this particular prosthesis?

This prosthesis for a lower leg amputation consists of an upper part for the thigh, and a lower part and foot, which replace the missing part of the leg. The prosthesis is equipped with a metal knee hinge, and ankle joint and a forefoot hinge, which is incorporated in the foot.
