The GUM for secondary education

Tours & workshops
What does a scientist do exactly? Is a researcher allowed to have doubts, fail or be creative? What challenges do scientists face? And what impact does research have on our society? A guide will take you deeper into the world of science and explore these questions. Discover the horse of Auzoux, a phonautograph, the cork model of the Pantheon and many other objects that reveal the growth, blossoming and development of science as a human activity.

Below you will find our offer for secondary education in the GUM. Would you like to book? Then click on the button below the programme of your choice.

GUM Tour - IMPACT

Science and society

Tour for first to sixth year secondary school pupils

We examine how science is connected with society, from medicine to Olympic sports and from crime to advertising. Are scientists in a better position to know what is good for society? Are they responsible for their discoveries or inventions? And what impact does science have on our daily lives? The young people will discover that science is not a remote concept at all.

GUM Tour - LIMITS

Science and ethics

GUM Tour - DOUBT

Philosophy of science

Guided tour for third to sixth year secondary school pupils

Which questions do scientists get asked? How do they deal critically with knowledge? How much scope is there for imagination, doubt and failure? The students will discover the person behind the scientist and dive deeper into the answers that science can (or cannot) offer. They will also explore the value of doubt and approach matters based on the philosophy of science.

Wunderkammer of TRUTH

Guided tour for first to sixth year secondary school pupils

Sometimes we have to rely on others – but who can and who can't we rely on? What feels real and what feels fake? If films, books and theatre are not real, why do they sometimes grab us by the throat? Is what we know about the past the (only) truth?

But also: do museums actually always tell the truth?

Once again, the GUM & Botanical Garden are bringing together big names and young talent from the art world with exceptional research from home and abroad and intriguing science projects in which you can participate live. The exhibition will extend into the rest of the museum and the Botanical Garden. Immerse yourself in the Wunderkammer of TRUTH and find out all about the truth.... or not?

  • Duration: 90 minutes

  • Number of pupils: 15

Workshops

GUM Atelier

Inside & outside the BOX

Interactive assignment for first to sixth year secondary school pupils

During this workshop, the pupils themselves will be the researchers. They will be presented with a skeleton in the BOX (= GUM’s workshop space). Research and asking the right questions will enable them to discover which animal the skeleton belongs to. The museum will provide inspiration on how to measure and classify and what the scientific method entails. As a result, the students will literally and figuratively think inside and outside the box.

We will adapt the workshop to the level of the group.

Due to the capacity of our workshop spaces, it is only possible to attend this workshop with 2 groups, both in the morning and in the afternoon.

  • Duration: 120 minutes

  • Number of pupils: 15

  • Price: €100,-
