Systematic and molecular research

Third to sixth year secondary school pupils

Discover what ‘systematic’ means and how molecular research affects the classification of plants. You will discover the evolutionary relationships between the different plant groups and their characteristics. We will go from moss to flowering plants and look at their systematic classification.

Workshops in the Botanical Garden

Step into the shoes of a scientist

All about stomata

Fifth and sixth year pupils in general and technical secondary education

In the laboratory of the Botanical Garden, the pupils will independently examine the photosynthesis process in plants. During this workshop, the focus lies on the microscopic examination of stomata. The pupils will determine the density of the stomata in different parts of the plant and investigate the factors that determine this density.

Due to the capacity of our workshop space, it is only possible to attend this workshop with 1 group at a time.

  • Duration: 120 minutes

  • Number of students: 15

  • Price: €110,-

Make your own microscope

First to fourth year secondary school pupils

Following in the footsteps of the 17th-century researcher Antoni Van Leeuwenhoek, pupils will create their own microscope using a glass pipette and Bunsen burner. They will use it to study plant cells. This workshop will help pupils to discover the relationship between technical innovation and scientific discoveries.

Due to the capacity of our workshop space, it is only possible to attend this workshop with 1 group at a time.

In this workshop, the pupils will seek out pests in the Botanical Garden. They will examine these organisms and their predators using a stereoscope. This workshop will help pupils to discover the importance of biological control for sustainable environmental management.

Due to the capacity of our workshop space, it is only possible to attend this workshop with 1 group at a time.
